Drinking More Water Helps Lose Excess Weight
People who are constantly struggling to lose weight might have tried countless kinds of diets to shed those unwanted pounds. Some of these are healthy while others are more radical and drastic. If you are in the same situation and have tried all kinds of weight loss regimens, probably one of the simplest and most effective you can follow is simply to drink more water.
According to a study presented in August of last year, people who drank two 8-ounce glasses of plain water before the main meals while following a low-calorie diet, can lose weight and prevent its return for at least a year. The study’s lead author Brenda Davy, Ph.D. is an associate professor of nutrition at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg. Although it has been a widely held theory that drinking water will help with weight loss, Davy’s study is the first controlled trial to find out what happens when people are “preloaded” with water before they eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
A group of 48 overweight men and women, with ages ranging from 55-75 years old, were placed on a low-calorie diet. Half of the group was made to drink 16 ounces of water prior to eating meals. After three months of monitoring, the group who drank the water before meals lost a significant average of 15.5 pounds compared to an 11 pound weight loss for those who did not follow the water preloading routine.
After a year of doing the water routine, the water-drinkers lost an additional average of 1.5 pounds while the rest gained 2.2 pounds on average.
The reasons for the weight loss suggest that drinking water before meals will fill up your stomach, which will make you less hungry. It also makes you less tempted to reach out for sodas and other drinks which may be full of calories. The act of watching how you drink can also serve as a constant reminder to eat healthy and not to overeat.
In a diet world full of elaborate and complex regimens that may or may not work, drinking water approximately 20 minutes before your main meals can be enough to make you lose excess weight and to keep it from coming back. It is a low-risk diet that is good for your body and works even better if it replaces liquid calories. Drinking water will also improve your metabolism and get rid of toxins and wastes, including fat deposits that usually show up on the belly, hips, and thighs.
